Shri Jagat Hazarika chairs a workshop cum training on Pilot Survey of 21st Livestock Census today
Smt. Alka Upadhyaya, Secretary of Animal Husbandry and Dairy, spoke during a workshop and training on the Pilot Survey of the 21st Livestock Census by SMS.
A workshop/training on the Pilot Survey of the 21st Livestock Census was conducted today with senior officers from States and Unions and some members of the Technical Committee constituted for the 21st Livestock Census. The workshop was chaired by Shri Jagat Hazarika, Advisor Animal Husbandry Statistics Division of DAHD, Government of India.
The 21st Livestock Census is scheduled for completion in 2024 and will involve all states and territories from September to December of that year. Data will be transmitted online and through mobile devices. Every ward in the cities and every village will be counted. The following species of animals will be counted at their location, breed-wise, along with their age and sex: cattle, buffalo, mithun, yak, sheep, goat, pig, horse, pony, mule, donkey, camel, dog, rabbit, and elephant; poultry birds, such as ducks and other poultry birds, owned by households, household enterprises, and non-household enterprises.
The ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) provided the State-by-State most recent breed list for a variety of species and also emphasized the method for identifying the breed in the field, since breed-specific data on animals will also be gathered.
In addition to being used for the implementation of numerous Livestock Sector programs, results from the Livestock Census are also utilized for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) National Indicator Framework (NIF).

Context
The Animal Husbandry Statistics Department serves as the foundation for the development of policies and the execution of several programs within the animal husbandry industry. Livestock Census (LC) is the primary source for statistics on animal husbandry. A vast door-to-door field operation known as the Livestock Census gathers data on livestock from every household by counting domesticated animals and birds in order to determine the nation’s overall livestock wealth. Since 1919, the Government of India’s Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, which is under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, has conducted nationwide livestock censuses every five years to generate animal husbandry statistics. The 20th Livestock Census, or the most recent one, was carried out in 2019.
