Raising concerns over the ongoing delimitation process, Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Singh Mann on Saturday alleged that the BJP-led Union government is using it as a tool to sideline its political rivals.
Speaking to journalists during the flagging-off ceremony of 72 teachers to Finland, Mann criticized the undemocratic approach adopted by the Centre, suggesting that it casts doubt on BJP’s true intentions. He claimed that constituencies in states where BJP and its allies are weak are being reduced, while seats in BJP strongholds are being increased to serve its political agenda. CM Bhagwant Singh asserted that all like-minded parties would unite against this attempt to suppress democracy.
Addressing another issue, the Chief Minister highlighted Punjab’s vulnerability as a border state, where anti-national elements frequently attempt to disrupt peace. However, he praised the Punjab Police for consistently thwarting such threats, thanks to its modernization in investigation, science, and technology. CM Bhagwant Singh expressed confidence that the police force would continue upholding its legacy of protecting the nation’s unity and sovereignty.
Referring to the recent Amritsar incident, he accused divisive forces of trying to destabilize Punjab’s peace and progress. He assured that the state government would not allow such conspiracies to succeed and emphasized that Punjab’s law and order situation remains better than many other states, with the police maintaining strict vigilance.
CM Bhagwant Singh also pointed out that Punjab has long been a frontline warrior against cross-border terrorism and drug trafficking. He noted that drones have been frequently used to smuggle narcotics and weapons from across the border. However, he highlighted that the state’s anti-drug movement, Yudh Nasheyan Virudh, has significantly curbed drone-based smuggling.
Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains and other officials were also present on the occasion.
