Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak announced on Sunday that Punjab is fully prepared to welcome farmers in all 1,864 grain markets across the state for the wheat procurement season. He assured that all necessary arrangements—such as cold drinking water, sanitation, gunny bags, fans, transportation, and shelter—have been made to ensure farmers face no inconvenience while selling their wheat.
He emphasized that staff involved in the procurement process will not be granted leave unless absolutely necessary and must remain present at the grain markets to assist farmers.
Following a review meeting with officials from Ludhiana, Moga, Faridkot, Ferozepur, and Barnala, the Minister said the government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s leadership, has put comprehensive plans in place to support over 8 lakh farmers this season. With expectations of a bumper crop, the state is aiming to procure 124 lakh metric tonnes of wheat. To support this effort, the government has secured a Cash Credit Limit of ₹28,894 crore and arranged for 99% of the required gunny bags, ample storage space, and containers.
Kataruchak added that in addition to permanent mandis, 600 temporary procurement centers have been set up to manage the increased harvest. Farmers will receive payments within 24 hours of selling their wheat, with the Minimum Support Price fixed at ₹2,425 per quintal.
Reiterating the government’s resolve to purchase every grain of wheat brought by farmers, the Minister warned against any negligence in the procurement process.
During the review, he inspected the availability of basic facilities like cleanliness, drinking water, lighting, and shaded waiting areas. He directed officials to remain present at the mandis throughout the procurement period and ensure that first-aid medical kits are also readily available to handle any emergencies.
