“Is this the future we’re looking at?” Ratna Pathak Shah Speaks Out
Actor Ratna Pathak Shah has raised concerns about how today’s youth are increasingly isolating themselves, spending more time alone in their rooms. Speaking at a FICCI Flo event in Hyderabad, the actress shared her thoughts on the growing tendency among young people to stay in their rooms for long hours, often glued to their phones, laptops, or gaming devices.

During her talk, Ratna Pathak Shah revealed that she has noticed this behavior in her own children and others. “I know that my kids, and a lot of other kids I know, wake up in the morning, have breakfast, shut the room, and they’re gone for the day,” she said. This kind of isolation, where young people spend most of their time behind closed doors, has become increasingly common, and Ratna expressed her concern about it.
Ratna Pathak Shah Shares Disturbing Story of Japanese Man’s 2-Year Isolation
Ratna Pathak Shah also shared a disturbing story about a Japanese man, an acquaintance of one of her friends, who hadn’t left his room for two years. “He does everything in his room; work, entertainment, everything on his laptop. We serve him meals in his room, and he’s completely isolated,” Ratna Pathak Shah said. She described this situation as “frightening” and asked, “Is this the future we’re looking at? Is this what our children are going to be?” This story made her reflect on the potential consequences of young people becoming more isolated and living more in the digital world than in the real world.
Ratna Pathak Shah’s comments highlight the concerns of many parents today, who are worried about how technology and digital entertainment might be making their children retreat into isolation. However, she also expressed hope that in India, human connection would remain important and that young people would continue to value face-to-face interactions. “I’m hoping that at least in our country, human contact will be needed, will be wanted, and will be celebrated,” she added.
Ratna Pathak Shah is not alone in her concerns. Actor Arshad Warsi has also spoken about this issue. In a recent conversation on the Unfiltered by Samdish YouTube channel, Arshad shared how his kids tend to spend days in their rooms, absorbed in their phones. “Their life revolves around their phone. Once they enter their room, they don’t get out for 2-3 days,” he said. This kind of behavior is becoming more common among young people, and it’s something many parents are noticing.
