Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann will engage in a direct dialogue with the state’s farmers during the inaugural ‘Sarkar-Kisan Milni’ event, scheduled for April 12 at Punjab Agriculture University (PAU), Ludhiana. The main goal of this initiative is to conserve the state’s valuable groundwater by promoting paddy varieties that require less water.
The event, expected to attract over 1,100 farmers, will feature several informational stalls to raise awareness about various state government initiatives. A key focus of the Milni will be educating farmers on paddy cultivation ahead of the upcoming season.
During the event, farmers will be introduced to water-efficient paddy transplant techniques, with an emphasis on using high-yielding paddy varieties approved by PAU. Additionally, to address the issue of high moisture content in paddy crops that complicates harvesting in October, the government has decided to begin the paddy season earlier, starting June 1. Paddy cultivation w ill be zoned across the state, with plans already underway for a coordinated approach.
The state will soon announce phased sowing dates for different zones, ensuring that farmers can take full advantage of the new schedule. Renowned agriculture experts will also be involved in the Milni to offer guidance to farmers. The event will aim to both preserve groundwater and boost farmers’ incomes.
