Aamir Khan Shares Character Details for Sitaare Zameen Par, Confirms June 2025 Release
Aamir Khan has officially shared new insights into his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, which he describes as a thematic successor to the 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par. In a recent interaction with his China fan club, the actor revealed key elements of the storyline and his character, sparking curiosity around how the film will differ from its emotionally charged predecessor.

Aamir Khan’s New Character in Sitaare Zameen Par Breaks the Mold of His Past Roles
Aamir Khan, who played the empathetic art teacher Ram Shankar Nikumbh in Taare Zameen Par, will return in Sitaare Zameen Par in a role that he claims is the “exact opposite.” His new character, Gulshan, is a basketball coach with a rough personality and little patience for others. “He is not sensitive at all. He is very rude, politically incorrect and he insults everybody. He fights with his wife, mother. He is a basketball coach and he beats up his senior coach. He is a person with a lot of internal problems, and the story is how he changes with the film,” he said.
The film explores how this brash, troubled character gradually transforms through his interactions with differently-abled individuals. Aamir Khan shared that the people he encounters in the story become instrumental in teaching him compassion, kindness, and what it truly means to be human.
Although both films focus on themes of acceptance, empathy, and the challenges faced by differently-abled individuals, Sitaare Zameen Par will take a markedly different tone. Unlike the emotional drama of Taare Zameen Par, the upcoming film will be a comedy, aiming to evoke laughter while still delivering an impactful message. “It’s a film about differently abled people, love, friendship, and life,” Aamir Khan stated.
The film is directed by RS Prasanna, known for his work on Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017), and is an official remake of the Spanish film Champions. That 2018 original told the story of a coach who is forced to train a team of players with intellectual disabilities as part of a community service sentence. The Hindi adaptation appears to follow a similar narrative arc while incorporating new cultural nuances and characters.
In addition to Aamir Khan, Sitaare Zameen Par stars Taare Zameen Par actor Darsheel Safary and Genelia Deshmukh in pivotal roles. The casting reunites Aamir Khan with Safary, who played the dyslexic child Ishaan in the original film and was praised for his performance.
While the production team has not yet confirmed the official release date, it has been reported that Sitaare Zameen Par is scheduled to hit theatres on June 20, 2025. According to insider sources, the film’s trailer is expected to be attached to Raid 2, Ajay Devgn’s upcoming film set for release on May 1, 2025. The move is seen as a strategic effort to reach a wide, theatre-going audience.
“The idea is to communicate the date directly to the cinema-going audience, and Raid 2 is a film which is expected to do well at the box office. This is his plan at the moment, but knowing Aamir, there could be last-minute changes too,” the source added.
Aamir Khan has been selective with his recent projects, and expectations are high for Sitaare Zameen Par to deliver both entertainment and a meaningful narrative. With a bold shift in tone and a character far removed from his previous sensitive roles, Aamir Khan appears ready to challenge himself once again—this time, through humor and transformation.
