On Monday, 14-year-old Indian batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi made history by becoming the youngest player ever to score a century in senior T20 cricket, playing a crucial role in Rajasthan Royals’ successful run chase against Gujarat Titans in the IPL.
The left-hander, who made his IPL debut on April 19 as the league’s youngest-ever player, lit up Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium with a sensational 100 off just 35 balls, hammering seven fours and 11 sixes to decimate the opposition bowling.
Suryavanshi surpassed the previous record held by Vijay Zol of Maharashtra, who scored a century at 18 years and 118 days in an Indian domestic match against Mumbai in 2013.
Suryavanshi’s century is now the second-fastest in IPL history, following Chris Gayle’s 30-ball century for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2013.
The teenage sensation, Suryavanshi, was finally dismissed by fast bowler Prasidh Krishna for 101 off 38 balls, leaving the field to a standing ovation from both the home crowd and his teammates.
“It feels like a dream to score a century in the IPL. I’m really happy. It’s my first century in the IPL, and it came in just my third innings. The hard work I’ve been putting in over the last three to four months is paying off,” the young talent said.
