Karan Johar Defends Alia Bhatt Against Nepotism Criticism and Reacts to Babil Khan’s Viral Breakdown
Karan Johar, one of Bollywood’s most prominent filmmakers, has often been at the center of the nepotism debate, with critics labeling him as the “nepo king” for promoting star kids. However, Johar recently spoke out, urging people to move on from the ongoing bashing of nepotism. He also expressed his deep empathy for Babil Khan, the son of late actor Irrfan Khan, after a viral video showed the young actor breaking down emotionally.

Karan Johar’s Take on Nepotism
In an exclusive interview with Galatta Plus, Karan Johar opened up about the constant criticism he faces regarding nepotism in Bollywood. When asked whether he would hesitate to launch talented individuals from film families, Johar responded, “Not at all. It has come to a point where even hating on something like nepotism has become fashionable. The more you bash, the more engagement you get. People are enjoying nepo-bashing and targeting star kids. I just feel like—move on!”
Johar further explained that the love for criticizing star kids has only grown over time, but he is adamant that talent should be the primary criterion for success in the industry, irrespective of one’s family background.
Defending Alia Bhatt Against Nepotism Criticism
The topic of nepotism also brought up the subject of Alia Bhatt, one of the most successful actresses in recent times, who has often faced similar criticisms. Johar passionately defended Alia, stating, “That’s not true. Please come and look at our roster. Have you seen Highway, Udta Punjab, Raazi, Gangubai? Just look at her filmography. If you’re still calling her a nepo kid, then you’re simply being idiotic.”
Johar emphasized that Alia’s remarkable career and diverse choice of roles are proof of her undeniable talent, dismissing any claims that her success was solely due to her background.
Karan Johar’s Empathy for Babil Khan
Johar also shared his thoughts on Babil Khan’s emotional breakdown, which recently went viral. The video showed the young actor visibly upset, overwhelmed by the pressures of the industry. Johar, who is a parent himself, expressed his deep empathy, saying, “I felt as bad as anyone else—as a parent—when I saw Babil’s meltdown. It was heartbreaking. I have a son and a daughter, and it hit me on a personal level.”
Johar’s heartfelt response reflects his concern for the well-being of young actors who, despite their privilege, still face the heavy burdens of fame, expectations, and the public eye.
