Is Google’s New AI Mode the End of Traditional Search?
In a move that could redefine how we interact with the internet, Google just flipped the switch on its most ambitious search update in years: “AI Mode.” (ALSO READ: OpenAI Just Dropped $6.5 Billion to Build the Future of AI Hardware — With Jony Ive!)

Unveiled to fanfare at the company’s annual I/O conference in Mountain View, California, this new feature turns everyday searches into full-blown conversations with an expert-level AI. Instead of sifting through pages of links, users now get direct, detailed answers — fast, smart, and eerily intuitive.
Imagine asking Google, “Plan me a weekend trip to Nashville, book the concerts, and show me where to eat”—and getting a complete, personalized itinerary, tickets booked, and restaurant reviews, all in one go. That’s where AI Mode is headed.
Backed by Google’s latest Gemini 2.5 AI model, AI Mode takes the tech giant’s earlier “AI overviews” feature and supercharges it. Since rolling out limited previews earlier this year, over 1.5 billion people have been exposed to AI-enhanced results — and now, everyone in the U.S. gets a taste.
Good News for Users, Bad News for the Web?
According to a recent BrightEdge study, websites have seen clickthrough rates from Google search results plummet nearly 30% over the past year. Why? Because users are getting everything they need directly from Google’s AI — no need to click anywhere else.
Publishers, bloggers, and business owners are worried. If Google becomes the final destination for answers, what happens to the open web?
Even Google’s own AI Mode admits it: the tool told The Associated Press that its rise is “highly likely” to make Google even more powerful — and that web publishers should be concerned.
Google Glass?
Google also teased a return to smart glasses — this time powered by Android XR and a built-in AI assistant. Remember Google Glass? It was ahead of its time (and a little creepy). This new version, created in partnership with fashion-forward Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, aims to be cooler, smarter, and far more useful.
They’ll let you interact with the world using just your voice and a pair of stylish specs — no phone needed.
Google’s not alone in this AI race. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI-first platforms are gaining traction, especially among younger, tech-savvy users. Apple exec Eddy Cue even testified that Safari users are doing fewer Google searches, as AI becomes the new go-to.
With the U.S. government breathing down its neck in an antitrust trial, Google is arguing that this AI explosion proves it doesn’t have an unbreakable monopoly. After all, AI is changing the game — for everyone.
