According to a report by Business Standard, the FDA discovered multiple lapses during a recent inspection. These included fungal growth on food products, improper cold storage temperature maintenance, and no clear separation between expired and valid items. Additionally, food items were reportedly stored directly on wet and dirty floors, some near clogged stagnant water, raising significant hygiene concerns.
The inspection was prompted following information shared by Maharashtra’s FDA Minister, Yogen Kadam.
The regulatory authority stated that Kiranakart Technologies, the company operating Zepto, violated provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act (2006) and the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations (2011).
“The findings constitute a failure to comply with the conditions of the licence. Accordingly, an immediate suspension of Zepto’s food license was ordered under relevant provisions,” said Anupamaa Balasaheb Patil, Assistant Commissioner (Food), Maharashtra FDA.
The suspension remains effective until Zepto achieves full compliance and receives clearance from licensing authorities.
Zepto’s Response
A Zepto spokesperson responded, affirming the company’s commitment to rectifying the identified lapses and strengthening internal processes to ensure safe product quality.
“We are taking all necessary corrective measures to resume operations in accordance with regulatory obligations and applicable laws at the earliest. Maintaining the highest standards of food safety and hygiene is non-negotiable,” the spokesperson said.
Zepto has reportedly initiated an internal review and is cooperating with authorities to ensure swift compliance, aiming to reinstate Zepto’s food license as soon as possible.
