The New Google Photos Update That’s Actually a Game-Changer
June 7, 2025 — Google is giving Photos a bit of a makeover on Android, and it’s starting with a refreshed design for albums. The update brings in elements from the new Material 3 Expressive (M3E) design language, which Google previewed last month, and also introduces an easier way to share albums — using QR codes.
The New Google Photos Features –
The new albums on Google Photos view feels noticeably cleaner. Gone is the old layout that showed a description field and a row of buttons beneath the album cover. In its place is a sleeker, floating toolbar that lets you quickly share, add photos, or edit the album. The Edit option used to be tucked away in the overflow menu, but now it’s right up front where it’s easier to find. The “Sort photos” button has also moved up to the top bar for quicker access.
When editing an album, you’ll now see a docked toolbar at the bottom to add photos, text, and locations — all of which used to be scattered across the top bar. You can still add a description here, and there are now two new cards up top for tweaking the album cover and highlights.
While the redesign doesn’t include the full-bleed album cover that Google previously hinted at, the overall look feels more modern and less cluttered. Material 3 Expressive seems to be about streamlining the interface and making features easier to reach — and this update does exactly that.
As for the rest of the Google Photos app, it hasn’t been updated just yet. But keep an eye out — a bigger redesign, including a new editor interface, could be landing later this month.
