Millions Will Lose Jobs by 2030 | Nikhil Kamath Says Degrees Won’t Save You
The global job market is on the brink of a major transformation, with technology set to reshape how work is done—and who thrives in the future workforce. Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath has issued a stark warning: the traditional 4-year college degree is becoming obsolete, and those who fail to adapt risk being left behind.

According to a recent World Economic Forum (WEF) study, by 2030, automation and technology will displace 92 million jobs worldwide. However, the evolving landscape will also create 170 million new roles, resulting in a net gain of 78 million jobs. The catch? Only workers who embrace lifelong learning and continuously upgrade their skills will be able to seize these new opportunities.
Nikhil Kamath emphasized that “days of 4-year degrees are over,” highlighting the need for skill-based education and adaptability. “The job market will reset brutally unless people move beyond traditional education and focus on in-demand skills,” he said.
The study projects that technology will handle 34% of work tasks by 2030—up from 22% today. Meanwhile, tasks performed solely by humans will fall to 33%, with hybrid human-technology roles maintaining a steady 33%. This shift underscores the growing importance of collaboration between humans and machines in the workplace.
The most sought-after skills in the coming decade are expected to include artificial intelligence (AI), big data analytics, cybersecurity, creative thinking, and environmental stewardship. These skills will be crucial for workers aiming to remain relevant and competitive.
Kamath’s warning serves as a call to action for educational institutions, businesses, and individuals alike to rethink how skills are developed and valued. The future belongs to the adaptable, the tech-savvy, and those who are committed to continuous learning.
As Nikhil Kamath put it, “It’s no longer about degrees on a wall—it’s about skills in your hands.”
