Originally intended to unfold after a heartfelt moment, as Peter Parker mourned Aunt May, the plan was for the portals to open dramatically, dropping the previous Spider-Men into Tom Holland’s timeline. But this setup was changed following a fan’s Reddit theory while filming was still underway.
Watts shared at the Mediterrane Film Festival, via Collider,
“We were writing the script… it always seemed like Peter’s going to be sad because Aunt May has just died, and that the portals are going to open, and the two Spider-Men are going to step out.”
However, once the Reddit speculations went viral, the filmmakers made last-minute changes to preserve the shock value. Instead of that somber tone, Ned’s sling ring moment—used to summon help during the big fight—became their entry point, preserving emotional impact and original audience surprise.
That pivotal adjustment helped maintain Spider-Man: No Way Home’s status as one of Marvel’s most thrilling multiverse crossovers, delivering a surprise that even the most devoted fans didn’t fully anticipate.
