As part of its ongoing anti-corruption drive, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) today arrested ASI Satnam Singh, posted at Police Station Islamabad, Amritsar, for accepting a bribe of ₹20,000 as the first instalment of a ₹1 lakh demand.
According to a Vigilance Bureau spokesperson, the case began when complainant Inderjeet Singh of Bhai Manj Road, Amritsar, reported that his friend, financial advisor Paras Mehta, had invested funds for one Sunil Kumar in the share market. After a market crash caused a loss of ₹2 lakh, Sunil Kumar allegedly coerced Paras into signing four blank cheques and an affidavit of ₹6 lakh, later filing a fraud case at Police Station Islamabad. Paras Mehta, in turn, lodged a complaint against Sunil Kumar at the Amritsar Commissionerate.
The fraud complaint against Paras was marked to ASI Satnam Singh, who allegedly contacted Paras and demanded ₹1 lakh to “resolve” the matter, insisting on an immediate ₹20,000 payment as the first instalment. Unwilling to pay a bribe, Inderjeet Singh and Paras Mehta approached DSP Vigilance Bureau Unit Amritsar, which arranged a trap.
Vigilance Bureau team caught ASI Satnam Singh red-handed while accepting ₹20,000 in the presence of a government witness. A case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) has been registered at VB Police Station, Range Amritsar. The investigation is ongoing, and the accused will be produced in court tomorrow.
