AIIMS-trained Dr. Saurabh Sethi shares 5 facts about Vitamin D, revealing why sunlight beats supplements and how to naturally prevent deficiency.
Health & Wellness Desk: Are you relying solely on supplements to meet your daily Vitamin D needs? According to Dr. Saurabh Sethi — a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford — you might not need pills at all. In a recent Instagram post dated October 2, Dr. Sethi shared five essential facts about Vitamin D, revealing surprising truths about deficiency, over-supplementation, and the best natural sources.
Also known as the “sunshine vitamin,” Vitamin D plays a critical role in your body — far beyond just bone health. Here’s what Dr. Sethi wants everyone to know:
1. Vitamin D Is More Than Just a Vitamin
“First, it’s not just a vitamin,” says Dr. Sethi. “Vitamin D functions more like a hormone, influencing over 200 genes in your body.”
This means that its effects extend far beyond your bones. It’s essential for immunity, mood regulation, and even disease prevention.
2. You Can’t Get Enough From Food Alone
Thinking you can eat your way to sufficient Vitamin D? Think again.
“Food sources of Vitamin D are rare,” explains Dr. Sethi. “You’d need to eat large amounts of salmon, tuna, eggs, or mushrooms to match the amount your skin produces in just 15 minutes of sun exposure.”
This makes sunlight exposure the most efficient way to maintain healthy Vitamin D levels.

3. Vitamin D Deficiency Is Often Silent
Unlike some deficiencies that show clear signs, low Vitamin D levels often go unnoticed.
“It can manifest subtly — as fatigue, low mood, or frequent infections,” says Dr. Sethi.
That means many people are deficient without even realizing it — until more serious issues arise.
4. More Isn’t Always Better — Supplements Can Be Harmful
With so many people taking high-dose Vitamin D supplements, Dr. Sethi sounds a note of caution.
“Over-supplementing can lead to kidney problems and other complications,” he warns. “For most adults, the safe and effective range is 600 to 800 IU daily — but always consult your doctor before starting any supplement.”
5. Midday Sunlight Is the Best Natural Source
Sunlight remains the most natural and effective way to boost Vitamin D levels — no pills required.
“Just 10 to 30 minutes of midday sun, with arms and legs exposed, can help your body produce between 1,000 to 2,000 IU of Vitamin D,” says Dr. Sethi.
Make sure to avoid sunscreen during this short exposure, but don’t overdo it — prolonged sun can still damage the skin.
