CM Rekha Gupta: A major step is underway to restore the Yamuna River, Delhi’s most sacred and historic river, to its pristine and clean state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to inaugurate projects worth ₹1816 crore aimed at making the Yamuna clean and pollution-free. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that cleaning the Yamuna is the top priority of the Delhi government, and the central government is fully supporting this mission.
₹1816 Crore Projects to Revolutionize Yamuna Cleaning
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that on October 9, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for multiple crucial projects, including state-of-the-art Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and clean water supply schemes. These projects are expected to significantly reduce pollution in the Yamuna by preventing untreated sewage from entering the river.
Modern Sewage Network for Delhi
The launch of these projects will bring a modern sewage network to Delhi. The 22 major drains that discharge waste into the Yamuna will be connected to newly built STPs. These treatment plants will clean the sewage before releasing water into the river, thereby greatly reducing pollution levels.

Asia’s Largest Sewage Treatment Plant at Okhla
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted that Asia’s largest sewage treatment plant at Okhla is now ready. This advanced plant, with a capacity of 124 million gallons per day (MGD), will replace four older plants and treat sewage for nearly 4 million residents of South, Central, and Old Delhi. The plant will not only treat sewage but will also generate electricity and produce reusable sludge, making it a sustainable and eco-friendly solution.
Yamuna: The Lifeline of Culture and Faith
CM Rekha Gupta stated, “Yamuna is not just a river; it is the lifeline of our culture and faith.” She stressed that making the river pollution-free is both a responsibility and a firm commitment of the government. The goal is to restore the Yamuna to a clean, pollution-free, and rejuvenated state in the coming years.
‘Clean Rivers, Prosperous India’ Campaign
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Delhi government is taking concrete steps as part of the ‘Clean Rivers, Prosperous India’ initiative. This campaign is not just about environmental conservation but also about reviving society and culture. The Chief Minister urged every citizen to contribute to this noble cause so that the Yamuna regains its historic identity and sanctity.
Increasing Sewage Treatment Capacity
Currently, Delhi produces about 3,600 million liters per day (MLD) of sewage, while the existing treatment plants have a capacity of roughly 3,474 MLD. This leaves nearly 600 MLD of untreated sewage entering the Yamuna. The government aims to eliminate this gap within the next two years.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed confidence that these new projects will significantly reduce pollution in the Yamuna, allowing Delhi’s residents to witness the realization of a clean Yamuna and a greener Delhi very soon.
