In a landmark move poised to transform western Rajasthan’s economy, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma announced that the long‑awaited Pachpadra Refinery in Barmer district will begin operations in December. The project, estimated at around ₹ 72,000 crore, follows more than a decade of political delay and is expected to generate massive investment and employment opportunities across the region.

The refinery is being developed by HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Ltd (HRRL) in partnership with the state government (26 % stake). CM Bhajan Lal Sharma 56recently met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi to provide a progress update and formally invited him to the inauguration of the project.

Government Stake & Economic Impact

CM Bhajan Lal Sharma confirmed that the Rajasthan government’s 26 % equity in the project will help unlock thousands of direct jobs and lakhs of indirect jobs, especially benefiting youth in Barmer, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. He explained that the project falls under the newly developed Rajasthan Petro Zone, which is designed to accelerate downstream industry growth across 11 identified blocks.

West Rajasthan’s Transformation

Analysts say the refinery will not only strengthen the petro‑chemical ecosystem in Rajasthan, but also mark a major turning point for the state’s economy. Beginning production at last after 12 years of anticipation, the project signals a shift from desert land to a hub of energy and industry.

Countdown to December

The simultaneous second anniversary of the state government and the launch of the refinery in December make the month historic for Rajasthan. Officials say the commencement of operations will boost investor confidence and raise the state’s profile among national and global players.
