In a landmark move aimed at empowering women in the workforce, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has issued a Gazette notification allowing women employees to work night shifts between 7:00 pm and 6:00 am. Enhanced Safety Measures for Women at Work
The government has laid out a comprehensive framework to ensure women’s safety during night shifts. Employers are required to implement strict workplace safety measures, including CCTV surveillance, deployment of female security personnel, and dedicated transportation facilities for women commuting during late hours. In addition, women working these shifts will now receive double wages, reinforcing the commitment to fair pay.
Extended Working Rights and Overtime Reforms
The new directive allows women to work up to six days a week, providing greater flexibility in work schedules. A significant reform also includes an increase in the maximum permissible overtime from 75 hours to 144 hours per quarter, with compensation at twice the regular wage rate.
