Ranveer Singh apologizes for Kantara controversy after mimicking Chamundi Daiva scene; clarifies intentions and respects cultural sentiments.
Ranveer Singh, the Bollywood star currently promoting his upcoming action-thriller Dhurandhar, has issued a public apology following backlash over his mimicry of a scene from Rishab Shetty’s hit film Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1. The incident occurred during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 in Goa, where Singh imitated the iconic Chamundi Daiva possession scene, inadvertently sparking criticism from fans and the film community.
The Controversial Moment
At IFFI, Ranveer Singh addressed Rishab Shetty directly from the stage, praising his performance while also attempting to imitate the scene in which Chamundi Daiva, referred to by Singh as a “female ghost,” possesses the character. Although his intention was to honor Shetty’s performance, the gesture was perceived by many as disrespectful towards cultural and religious sentiments.
Videos of the moment quickly went viral on social media, with fans expressing outrage. Many pointed out that Chamundi Mata is revered as a goddess, not a ghost, and criticized Singh for misrepresenting the cultural significance of the scene.
Dear @RanveerOfficial you don’t know the difference between God and Ghost ….🤦🤦🤦
Chavundi is Goddess not ghost ..🙏
And you literally mocking on big stage..🤦#KantaraChapter1 #RanveerSingh pic.twitter.com/SXV3HZdUfq— Agasthya ᵀᵒˣᶦᶜ (@sachi_1933) November 29, 2025

Ranveer Singh Issues Apology
Responding to the criticism, Ranveer Singh released a formal statement clarifying his intentions. “My intention was to highlight Rishab’s incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much effort it takes to perform that scene in the way he did, and he has my utmost admiration,” Singh said. He further added, “I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition, and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologize.”

Fan and Industry Reactions
The apology was met with mixed responses. While some fans appreciated Singh’s clarification, others insisted that celebrities need to be more cautious when referencing religious or cultural symbols in public performances. Meanwhile, Rishab Shetty has not publicly commented on the incident, though the video shows him maintaining a composed demeanor during Singh’s mimicry.
Despite the controversy, Ranveer Singh continues to focus on promoting his upcoming film Dhurandhar, set to release on December 5, 2025. The film, directed by Aditya Dhar, also stars Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Akshay Khanna, and Arjun Rampal, and is generating significant buzz among audiences for its action-packed narrative and high-octane performances.
Ranveer Singh’s recent experience serves as a reminder of the sensitivity surrounding cultural portrayals in India’s entertainment industry, emphasizing the importance of balancing humor and respect when engaging with revered traditions and symbols.
