Bollywood actress Nushrratt Bharuccha has found herself at the center of a religious debate following her recent visit to the iconic Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain. During her visit, the actress participated in the Bhasma Aarti, offered prayers to Lord Mahakal, and performed customary rituals including offering water, in line with temple traditions.
Cleric Criticizes Nushrratt Bharuccha’s Actions
The visit quickly drew strong reactions from certain sections, with Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi, National President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, issuing a statement condemning Bharuccha’s actions. According to him, a Muslim woman participating in Hindu religious practices, such as visiting a temple and performing rituals, is not permissible under Islamic principles.

Maulana Razvi urged the actress to seek repentance, advising her to perform tauba (repentance), recite istegfar (seeking forgiveness), and read the kalma as a means to atone, citing his interpretation of Sharia law.
‘Guilty in the Eyes of Sharia’
Speaking from Bareilly, Maulana Razvi described Nushrratt Bharuccha’s actions as a “major sin” and asserted that she is “guilty in the eyes of Sharia.” He emphasized that performing Hindu religious rituals constitutes a serious violation of Islamic principles. “By offering prayers and performing rituals at the temple, she has acted against Islam and fallen under the ambit of Sharia for committing a grave offence,” he said.
Wider Debate on Religious Freedom
The incident has sparked wider conversations on social media, with many defending Bharuccha’s visit as an individual’s personal choice and an example of interfaith respect, while others supported the cleric’s stance on adherence to religious boundaries.
Nushrratt Bharuccha has not publicly responded to the cleric’s remarks so far. Her temple visit, however, underscores the growing tension between personal religious freedom and conservative interpretations of faith in contemporary India.
