Delhi CM Rekha Gupta plans rule changes to allow private EVs as taxis, promote shared mobility, solar charging, and modern transport solutions.

In a major move to modernize Delhi’s transport system and curb pollution, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced plans to amend regulations to allow private electric vehicles (EVs) to operate as taxis. The announcement came after a detailed meeting with vehicle manufacturers and aggregator companies like Ola and Uber on Friday.

Roadmap for Cleaner Delhi

The Delhi government has begun preparing a comprehensive roadmap to reduce pollution in the capital while promoting modern transportation solutions. CM Rekha Gupta emphasized that controlling pollution without reducing the number of vehicles on roads is impossible. She called for collaboration between the government, vehicle manufacturers, and aggregators to ensure sufficient EV supply to meet growing demand.

“The government is ready to provide policy support and incentives, but vehicle prices must remain attractive for the common citizen. Companies must also ensure that benefits reach the end-users,” she said.

Flexible Rules and Incentives for EV Adoption

The Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the government is ready to make regulations more flexible to encourage citizens to buy EVs and adopt shared transport options. The meeting included Transport Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh, senior officials from the transport department, representatives from Tata Motors, Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Honda, and aggregator companies Ola, Uber, and Rapido.

Solar Charging and Battery Waste Management

Vehicle manufacturers stressed the need for robust charging infrastructure and a citizen-friendly EV policy for widespread adoption. CM Rekha Gupta responded that the government is ready to provide land for charging stations while urging companies to explore solar energy-based charging solutions. She also highlighted that battery waste management will be the responsibility of the companies to prevent new pollution hazards.

Shared and Women-Driven Taxis in a Month

The meeting concluded with a consensus to introduce shared taxis within a month, including taxis driven by women. Aggregator companies expressed interest in integrating private EVs and BS-6 vehicles as taxis, which will require regulatory changes. CM Gupta assured that these changes would be implemented soon without compromising passenger safety.

Ring Road and Airport Shuttle Services

The CM Rekha Gupta also instructed aggregators to explore integrating e-rickshaws into their platforms. In addition, pilot projects for Ring Road shuttle services and airport shuttles were approved to evaluate their feasibility and effectiveness before full-scale rollout.
