MCD Ward Committee elections postponed in Delhi, AAP’s Ankush Narang alleges procedural violations and political pressure by BJP, sparking controversy.
A major political controversy has erupted after the postponement of the MCD Ward Committee elections in the national capital. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Ankush Narang has strongly criticized the decision, alleging violations of procedure and raising questions over administrative transparency.
The dispute comes after the scheduled nomination process on May 29 and voting on June 3 were reportedly put on hold indefinitely, triggering concerns over the functioning of the municipal election system.
Allegations of Procedural Violation
AAP leader Ankush Narang claimed that the decision to postpone the elections was taken without following due process under the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act. He stated that as per Section 53(2) of the Act, any decision regarding scheduling or postponement of ward committee elections requires approval from the Chairperson.
According to Narang, bypassing this mandatory approval raises serious questions about the authority under which the order was issued and whether proper legal procedure was followed.

BJP Accused of Political Pressure
Escalating the political tension, Narang also alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is deliberately avoiding the election process due to growing internal dissent among its councillors.
He further claimed that in several zones, a shift in power balance appears likely, which may have influenced the decision to postpone the MCD Ward Committee elections. However, these allegations have not been independently verified.
Debate Over Democratic Functioning Intensifies
The issue has now sparked a wider debate in Delhi’s political circles regarding transparency and democratic governance in municipal bodies. Opposition leaders argue that delays in local body elections can weaken grassroots governance and reduce accountability in civic administration.
The MCD Ward Committee elections controversy has become a focal point of criticism against the civic administration, with calls for clarity on the decision-making process.
No Official Response Yet
As of now, the municipal administration has not issued any detailed official statement addressing the allegations or explaining the reasons behind the postponement. The silence has further fueled political speculation and demands for accountability.
