India’s leading men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the BWF World Championships 2026 after their scheduled opponents withdrew from the tournament. Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle pulled out of their Round of 32 match, giving the fifth-seeded Indian duo a direct passage into the last 16.
The Satwik-Chirag BWF World Championships campaign therefore began without the pair having to play a competitive match. The Badminton Association of India confirmed that the Scottish combination’s withdrawal resulted in a walkover for the Indian team.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had already received a bye in the opening round. They were scheduled to face Scotland’s Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle in the next stage, but the withdrawal changed the equation.

India also enjoyed success in women’s doubles, with Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand booking their place in the pre-quarterfinals.
The 39th-ranked Indian pair produced a composed performance against Lauren Lam and Allison Lee of the United States. Treesa and Gayatri won their Round of 32 match 21-15, 21-12 to move into the next stage.
Their victory strengthened India’s presence in the knockout rounds of the tournament being held in New Delhi.
Tanisha-Dhruv Also Progress
In mixed doubles, Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila continued India’s winning run. The Indian pair defeated Macau’s Leong Iok Chon and Ng Weng Chi 21-11, 21-11.
The comfortable straight-game victory booked their place in the last 16 and gave India another team in the pre-quarterfinal stage.
Sen and Unnati Register Singles Wins
India also recorded positive results in the singles draws.
Sen overcame Austria’s Collins Valentine Filimon after losing the opening game. He eventually turned the match around to win 16-21, 21-8, 21-4 in 45 minutes.
Unnati Hooda also progressed in women’s singles after defeating Myanmar’s Thet Htar Thuzar 22-20, 21-16. The first game was closely fought, but Unnati maintained control in the second to secure her place in the next round.
Setbacks for Indian Pairs
Not every Indian combination could make it through. Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi were knocked out of the women’s doubles competition by Bulgarian sisters Stefani Stoeva and Gabriela Stoeva. The Bulgarian pair secured a 21-7, 21-14 victory.
India also suffered defeats in mixed doubles. Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh, who entered the competition as late reserves, went down to Türkiye’s Emre Sonmez and Yesemen Bektas in a dramatic three-game encounter. The Turkish pair prevailed 21-16, 29-30, 22-24.
Ruthvika Gadde and Rohan Kapoor also exited after Canada’s Crystal Lai and Jonathan Lai fought back from a first-game loss. The Indian pair won the opening game 22-20, but the Canadian combination took the next two 21-19, 21-17.
