Delhi Rain Alert: Several parts of Delhi are under a red warning on Monday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts intense rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. The warning, issued through the district-wise nowcast system, remains valid until 2:10 pm.
The weather department has cautioned that affected areas could receive rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour during the warning period. East Delhi is among the areas placed under the red warning, with thunderstorms, lightning and winds of around 30-40 km/h also expected.
East Delhi Under Red Warning
According to the IMD’s district-wise nowcast issued at 11:10 am, East Delhi is facing a red warning for heavy rainfall of more than 15 mm per hour. The warning also covers the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning.
Several other parts of the capital have also been placed under the red warning category. Meanwhile, adjoining areas are under an orange alert. Large parts of eastern and southern Delhi fall under the red warning, while portions of central and western Delhi are covered by the orange alert.
The Delhi Rain Alert comes amid the possibility of multiple spells of rain across the capital during Monday.

Heavy Rain, Lightning and Strong Winds Expected
Along with rain, the IMD has warned of thunderstorms and lightning in the affected areas. Gusty winds could also accompany the weather activity, increasing the risk of difficult travel conditions.
Residents in areas under the warning are advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary travel during intense spells.
Delhi Weather Likely to Turn Drier From Tuesday
The current spell of rain is expected to be short-lived. The IMD has forecast little or no rain across most parts of Delhi from Tuesday onwards.
For Tuesday, only a possibility of very light rain has been indicated during the afternoon. On Wednesday, very light to light rain could occur at a few locations before noon. Another spell of light rain may affect many areas from afternoon to evening, with moderate rain possible at isolated places.
From Thursday through Sunday, the weather department has forecast no rain, with partly cloudy conditions likely to continue.
Why Could Delhi See a Dry Spell?
Weather experts have linked the expected change in rainfall activity to the position of the monsoon axis. According to amateur meteorologist Navdeep Dahiya, the axis has been fluctuating and has largely remained near the Himalayan foothills.
He said the axis occasionally shifts southward at night, which contributed to rainfall during the weekend. From Tuesday, however, the axis is expected to move towards the foothills, potentially resulting in drier conditions in Delhi through the end of August and possibly into early September.
Scattered Heavy Rain Possible in NCR| Delhi Rain Alert
Private weather forecaster Ashwary Tiwari also warned of intense but scattered rain across parts of Delhi-NCR. Areas including Ghaziabad, East Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon and South Delhi could experience heavy showers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.
According to the forecast, the weather may turn humid and hot again after the rain spell passes, while more scattered rain events could occur over the next couple of days.
Delhi’s August Rainfall Already Above Average
Delhi has already received more rain than its long-period average for August. The Safdarjung weather station, which is considered representative of the capital’s rainfall, recorded 3 mm of rain on Monday.
With this rainfall, Delhi’s total precipitation for August has reached 246.3 mm, which is around 13 mm above the IMD’s August long-period average of 233.1 mm.
Last year, Delhi recorded a much higher August rainfall total of 400.81 mm. The city had crossed its August average by August 15 after receiving rain on 11 days.
What Does the IMD Rainfall Scale Mean?
The IMD classifies rainfall according to its intensity. Rainfall of up to 15.5 mm is considered light, while 15.6 mm to 64.4 mm is classified as moderate. Rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is considered heavy, while 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm falls under the very heavy category.
The Delhi Rain Alert remains important for commuters and residents as thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds could affect several parts of the capital until the warning period ends. People should keep an eye on official weather updates before stepping out.
