Vaibhav Sooryavanshi took two wickets in four balls for East Zone against North East Zone in the Duleep Trophy quarter-final in Bengaluru.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi produced a memorable spell with the ball on Day 3 of the Duleep Trophy quarter-final between East Zone and North East Zone in Bengaluru. The teenage cricketer claimed two wickets in just four deliveries, adding to East Zone’s strong position in the contest.

The 15-year-old, who has also been named East Zone’s vice-captain, could not make a significant contribution with the bat. However, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi quickly made his presence felt when he was handed the ball against North East Zone.

Two wickets in four balls

The breakthrough came during the 28th over of North East Zone’s second innings. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi dismissed Kishan Lyngdoh with the second delivery of the over.

Lyngdoh stepped out in an attempt to attack a delivery outside the off stump but failed to control his shot. The ball took a leading edge towards the cover region, where substitute fielder Denish Das completed a good catch.

The wicket was particularly significant for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, as it marked his third First-Class wicket.

Three deliveries later, the young spinner struck again. Imliwati Lemtur attempted to defend a good-length delivery around off stump but managed only a thin outside edge. Wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan reacted quickly and completed the catch. Lemtur was dismissed for four.

East Zone in complete control

The double strike further strengthened East Zone’s grip on the quarter-final. After being asked to bat first, East Zone initially found themselves in trouble at 138/5. However, Sudip Kumar Gharami and Shahbaz Ahmed turned the innings around with impressive centuries.

Gharami scored 146, while Shahbaz produced a superb 167 as East Zone eventually reached a massive 467 in their first innings.

North East Zone struggled badly in response. Abhijit Sarkar led the bowling attack with a five-wicket haul, while Shahbaz Ahmed also contributed with three wickets. North East Zone were bowled out for just 111 and were forced to follow on.

North East Zone staring at heavy defeat

The follow-on did little to change the fortunes of North East Zone. By lunch on Day 3, they had slipped to 102/8 and were in serious danger of suffering a heavy defeat.

Anukul Roy continued to trouble the opposition and had already picked up three wickets in the second innings. Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami had not been required to make a major impact with the ball and remained without a wicket.

For Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the two-wicket burst provided another glimpse of his developing all-round skills. His contribution with the ball came at a crucial stage and helped East Zone move closer to securing a place in the semi-final.

The performance also ensured that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi remained one of the talking points of the Duleep Trophy quarter-final despite his modest contribution with the bat.
