J-K BJP staged a protest in Srinagar against the Omar Abdullah government over unemployment, price rise, corruption and electricity tariff hike.
The Jammu and Kashmir BJP on Wednesday staged a protest at Ghanta Ghar in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk, targeting the National Conference (NC) government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over unemployment, rising prices and alleged corruption.
The J-K BJP Protest is focused on several issues that the party says are affecting the people of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the lack of employment opportunities for young people. BJP leaders and workers are also expected to move from Lal Chowk towards the Civil Secretariat to stage a gherao.
BJP Raises Unemployment and Corruption Issues
BJP leader Altaf Thakur said the party’s protest is aimed at highlighting unemployment, corruption and issues related to Panchayat elections. He said party workers would march from Ghanta Ghar towards the Secretariat.
The J-K BJP Protest comes amid growing political differences between the BJP and the ruling National Conference over several public issues. The BJP has also criticised the recent increase in electricity tariffs in Jammu and Kashmir.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has maintained that the electricity tariff hike was taken due to circumstances and was not a decision taken voluntarily.

Heavy Security Deployment in Srinagar
Security arrangements have been strengthened across key parts of Srinagar in view of the competing political demonstrations. Heavy deployment has been reported along the route from Ghanta Ghar in Lal Chowk to the Civil Secretariat.
Security personnel have also been deployed around the BJP office in Srinagar ahead of the National Conference’s planned demonstration.
The J-K BJP Protest has therefore taken place amid heightened security arrangements in the city to prevent any untoward incident during the political gatherings.
National Conference Also Plans Protest
The National Conference has separately announced a protest at Gindun Park. The party is demanding the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir and accountability regarding commitments made by the Centre in Parliament and before the Supreme Court.
The simultaneous programmes have triggered a fresh political confrontation between the BJP and the National Conference.
Sunil Kumar Sharma Targets Omar Abdullah Government
Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Leader of Opposition Sunil Kumar Sharma criticised the National Conference for announcing its protest on the same day as the BJP demonstration.
Sharma said the BJP had announced its programme around a month earlier and that its primary focus was employment opportunities for the youth. He accused the National Conference of using the issue for political purposes and questioned its commitment to addressing unemployment.
He also alleged that the previous administration had failed to protect employment opportunities for young people.
Statehood Remains a Major Political Issue
Restoration of statehood continues to be a major political demand in Jammu and Kashmir. The region became a Union Territory following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
The National Conference has repeatedly raised the demand for restoration of statehood, while the BJP has focused its criticism on issues such as employment, development and governance.
The J-K BJP Protest highlights the widening political differences between the ruling National Conference and the opposition BJP in Jammu and Kashmir.
With both parties holding demonstrations in Srinagar, political activity in the Union Territory has intensified.
