Delhi Weather Alert: Heavy rain and thunderstorms lash the capital as IMD issues a red alert till 5 pm. More rain is forecast through the weekend.
The Delhi Weather Alert intensified on Friday as heavy rain and strong winds swept across several parts of the national capital. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi until 5 pm, warning residents about the possibility of intense rainfall in different areas.
The downpour came as the city remained covered by dense clouds, even as preparations continued for the BRICS Summit scheduled to be held on September 12 and 13. Areas in central and north Delhi, including Parliament Street and the Bharat Mandapam region, witnessed light to moderate rainfall.
Delhi Weather Alert: Heavy Rain Expected in Several Areas
According to the IMD’s afternoon update, some parts of Delhi could record rainfall of up to 15 mm per hour, while isolated areas may receive heavier showers exceeding 15 mm per hour over the next few hours.
The Delhi Weather Alert has raised concerns about waterlogging, traffic disruptions and difficult travel conditions in low-lying areas. People have been advised to remain cautious during periods of intense rain and thunderstorms.
The weather department has also forecast additional spells of rain during the BRICS Summit. On Saturday, September 12, Delhi is expected to experience one or two spells of very light to light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning from early morning through the forenoon.
Another spell of light to moderate rainfall is likely from the evening into the night.
Delhi Weather Alert Continues Through the Weekend
The Delhi Weather Alert is expected to remain relevant over the weekend, although no formal warning has been issued for Saturday so far. The IMD expects rainfall activity to continue across the capital, with conditions likely to remain cloudy.
Meteorologist Navdeep Dahiya attributed the weather activity to the movement of the monsoon axis over the region. He said easterly winds are expected to become dominant as the monsoon system shifts, bringing passing spells of moderate rain across Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
However, the rainfall is expected to remain relatively localized, with an overall coverage of around 30-40%. This means rainfall may not occur uniformly across all areas of the plains.

Temperatures Likely to Fall
The latest Delhi Weather Alert comes with some relief from the recent heat. Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 36.6°C on Thursday, but increased rainfall is expected to bring temperatures down.
From Saturday, the maximum temperature is forecast to remain below 33°C, providing residents with relief from the warm and humid conditions experienced in recent days.
Delhi AQI Rises Amid Reduced Rainfall
The Delhi Weather Alert comes at a time when the city’s air quality has also shown some deterioration. With limited rainfall over the previous few days, Delhi’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) climbed to 134 on Thursday, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The reading falls in the ‘moderate’ category and was the highest recorded in Delhi since July 19, when the city’s AQI stood at 171.
Under CPCB’s classification, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51-100 is ‘satisfactory’, 101-200 is ‘moderate’, 201-300 is ‘poor’, 301-400 is ‘very poor’, while readings above 400 fall into the ‘severe’ category.
With more rain expected across the capital, the Delhi Weather Alert could bring some improvement in air quality while also creating temporary challenges for commuters and residents.
