They then attend the famed Kapil Muni Temple, which is highly adored by its followers and has significant stories associated with it.
Gangasagar Mela Date
Gangasagar Mela 2024: The Mela begins a few days before Makar Sankranti and ends the day following the celebration. Hindu pilgrims from India and around the world assemble at Sagar Island to take part in the sacred practice of taking a heavenly plunge in the holy waters of the Ganges River before it meets the Bay of Bengal.
The first week of January sees the arrival of devotees, with the greatest number of pilgrims coming to the location on Makar Sankranti day. The auspicious bath is scheduled for January 15 and 16 of this year.
The Snan
The real Bath (Snan) and its religious activities begin one day prior to Makar Sankranti and end the next day, although the Ganga Sagar Mela Snan lasts for seven days.
Pilgrims pay prayers to Lord Surya, the Sun God, during the ceremonial early morning plunge on Makar Sankranti, an auspicious event. It is said that this heavenly immersion will atone for crimes and open the door to achieving Moksha, or spiritual freedom. In order to atone for their sins, devotees fast, complete the Maha Puja and Yagna at Kapil Muni’s temple at three in the morning, and then plunge into the chilly Ganges River.
Gangasagar Mela 2024: Hindus participate in the Ganga Sagar Snan from all across India and abroad. However, it is notably popular with people from West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Odisha due to their proximity to the site.
