Harpal Singh Cheema questioned Pargat Singh over drugs, sacrilege, the recruitment of 1,158 professors and Punjab’s sports budget.
Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has raised a series of questions for Congress leader Pargat Singh, asking him to explain his position on several political and administrative issues concerning Punjab.
In a statement, Harpal Singh Cheema questioned Pargat Singh over his political position, his earlier association with the Shiromani Akali Dal, issues related to drugs and sacrilege, the recruitment of 1,158 professors and the allocation of the sports budget.
Questions Over Political Position
Harpal Singh Cheema asked Pargat Singh to clarify which political faction he currently represents, particularly in the context of the ongoing political debate over sacrilege cases and the Badal family.
The remarks come amid a period of political activity in Punjab, with Pargat Singh recently appointed president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.

Questions on Drugs and Sacrilege
Cheema also questioned Pargat Singh about his period in the Akali Dal. Harpal Singh Cheema asked why, according to his statement, Pargat Singh did not raise his voice against drugs and sacrilege while he was associated with the party.
The issues of drug abuse and sacrilege have remained prominent subjects in Punjab’s political discourse. Pargat Singh has also publicly raised concerns over drug-related issues and sacrilege cases in recent political statements.
1,158 Professor Recruitment Raised
Another question raised by Harpal Singh Cheema concerns the recruitment of 1,158 professors. He asked Pargat Singh why the recruitment process was allegedly carried out by overlooking rules and the prescribed procedure.
The question relates to Pargat Singh’s earlier tenure as a Punjab minister, during which his portfolio included higher education and sports.
Sports Budget Also Under Question
Cheema also referred to Pargat Singh’s background in sports and asked why the sports budget was allegedly kept inadequate despite his experience in the field.
Harpal Singh Cheema said these issues should be answered before the people of Punjab, putting political accountability and past decisions at the centre of his questions.
Political Exchange Intensifies in Punjab
The latest remarks add to the ongoing political exchanges between the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress leaders in Punjab. Harpal Singh Cheema has sought explanations from Pargat Singh on four broad issues—political alignment, drugs and sacrilege, professor recruitment and sports funding.
Pargat Singh has previously raised questions about the Punjab government’s handling of issues including sacrilege and drugs, making these subjects part of the wider political debate in the state.
