Ahmedabad, Gujarat: Aam Aadmi Party MLA Gopal Italia has raised strong concerns over the alleged forced installation of transmission towers on farmers’ land in Gujarat, claiming misuse of old colonial-era laws and calling for urgent legal reforms.
Speaking through a detailed statement, the MLA said that farmers are facing hardships due to what he described as coercive practices supported by outdated legal provisions. The issue has been widely highlighted by Aam Aadmi Party Gujarat leaders, who are demanding a new and fair compensation law for farmers.
Aam Aadmi Party Gujarat Flags Issue of Forced Tower Installation
According to the concerns raised by Aam Aadmi Party Gujarat, private companies are allegedly using police assistance to install transmission towers on agricultural land without fair consultation or adequate compensation. The party has termed the use of a 140-year-old Telegraph Act as outdated and unjust in the current context.
Under the Aam Aadmi Party Gujarat stance, Gopal Italia said that farmers should not be intimidated by companies allegedly bringing police forces during land-related operations, and that stronger legal safeguards are needed.

Demands New Compensation Law
The Aam Aadmi Party Gujarat MLA has proposed a new bill in the state assembly aimed at ensuring fair and modern compensation for farmers. He argued that land affected by transmission towers loses market value and future development potential, which is not adequately compensated under current rules.
He further stated that the Aam Aadmi Party Gujarat proposal seeks to ensure that farmers receive either full market-value compensation or proper land acquisition instead of one-time payments.
AAP Gujarat Questions Use of Old Colonial Laws
Raising concerns over legal framework, the MLA said that the government is still relying on the 1885 Telegraph Act, which he described as outdated. The Aam Aadmi Party Gujarat leadership believes that laws should be updated to reflect current agricultural, technological, and economic realities.
He also emphasized that infrastructure development should not come at the cost of farmers’ rights and long-term land value.
Calls for Fair Planning and Transparency
The Aam Aadmi Party Gujarat statement also highlighted the need for planned infrastructure corridors for transmission lines, instead of random placement across agricultural land. The MLA suggested that a structured system should be developed to minimize damage to farmland and ensure transparency in project execution.
He added that farmers should also be given a share in long-term earnings generated by infrastructure projects built on their land.
AAP Stresses Farmer Rights Protection
Reiterating his stand, the MLA said that farmers should not be subjected to forced installations or inadequate compensation practices. The Aam Aadmi Party Gujarat has urged the government to introduce reforms that ensure justice, transparency, and fair treatment for farmers.
The statement concluded with a call for collective action to protect farmers’ rights and modernize outdated laws governing land use and compensation in Gujarat.
