Launching a sharp critique of previous governments for neglecting Punjab’s welfare, Aam Aadmi Party Punjab President and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora asserted that the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government will fiercely defend the state’s rights and interests.
Speaking in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha during a discussion on the resolution opposing CISF deployment at BBMB installations, introduced by the Water Resources Minister, Arora underscored the importance of water to Punjab, a primarily agrarian state. He noted that the state’s economy is deeply rooted in agriculture, with nearly 70% of the population dependent on farming.
Arora condemned earlier administrations for prioritizing political gains over long-term planning, citing the beginning of the SYL canal project under Congress during Indira Gandhi’s rule when Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan were all governed by the party. He reminded the House how the canal construction started in Kapuri and how legal challenges were both initiated and withdrawn under the same regime, making it a highly emotional issue for every Punjabi.
He also criticized the BJP-led central government for attempting to alter the BBMB selection committee—traditionally consisting of a Member (Power) from Punjab and a Member (Irrigation) from Haryana—despite Punjab contributing 60% of the project’s expenses.
Arora pointed out that the expansion of BSF’s jurisdiction in the state also occurred during Congress rule. He referred to a 2018 letter by then CM Captain Amarinder Singh to the Centre proposing that CISF take over jail security—suggesting a lack of faith in Punjab Police and contradicting the narrative of state autonomy. Furthermore, three out of four BBMB partner states had approved CISF deployment under Congress rule.
Reinforcing his support for the resolution, Arora reiterated the AAP government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Punjab’s interests. He firmly stated that Punjab Police is fully equipped to handle the security of BBMB sites and that there is no justification for deploying central forces.
