What Makes “Sholay – The Final Cut” Special
This re-release celebrates the 50th anniversary of Ramesh Sippy’s masterpiece and brings back the original climax, which had been removed from the initial 1975 release due to censorship concerns. The scene, depicting Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar) killing Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) with spiked shoes, had been banned by the Central Board of Film Certification for its violent content.
The Film Heritage Foundation has restored the movie in stunning 4K resolution, ensuring that audiences can experience the film in its original grandeur. The restored version will release on 1,500 screens across India, allowing both old and new generations of fans to witness the legendary tale like never before.
International Recognition of the Restored Version
Earlier in 2025, Sholay – The Final Cut was showcased at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where the premiere attracted cinema enthusiasts and dignitaries, including Ramesh Sippy and actor Bobby Deol. The TIFF screening highlighted the film’s enduring legacy and its significant contribution to Indian cinema.
