AIIMS Rishikesh
According to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh, the hospital is the first in India to treat craniosynostosis with spring assisted cranoplasty surgery. It is said that this surgical method represents a major advancement in the field of advanced medical interventions for infants with this congenital problem.
Using this approach, the institute claimed to have given a one and a half-month-old baby’s head a new form. The neurosurgery, anesthesia, and pediatrics departments of AIIMS Rishikesh collaborated with the plastic and reconstructive department of the institute to accomplish this remarkable feat.
Speaking of the institute’s latest surgical feat, the operating surgeon Dr Debarati Chattopadhyay of the burn and plastic surgery department said that Craniosynostosis- a congenital condition affecting 1 in 2000 children- is characterised by premature fusion of skull sutures and poses challenges to proper brain and skull development in infants. Historically, the most common surgical procedure was open cranial vault remodeling. She continued, “Spring Assisted Cranioplasty, with its novel approach, heralds a new era in the treatment of this condition.” The procedure entails carefully positioning specialized springs within the fused skull sutures. The surgical team creates these springs out of stainless steel wires, which are inserted following the removal of an improperly fused suture line strip.

According to Dr. Rajnish Kumar Arora, the team’s neurosurgeon and chairman of the institute’s neurosurgery department, this is a novel and successful method of expanding the skull in children with craniosynostosis.
This cooperative effort guarantees comprehensive care, from pre-operative evaluation to post-operative management, promoting a holistic approach to patient treatment, according to Dr. Meenu Singh, the institute’s executive director. She went on to say that the institution hopes to serve patients across the country by increasing awareness of this uncommon ailment and its cutting-edge treatment options through sharing their knowledge and experience.
