Amaal Mallik Discusses Past Relationship Ending Because of Religious Differences
Singer-composer Amaal Mallik has shared a deeply personal story about a past relationship that ended because of his Muslim background and his career in the film industry. Speaking openly for the first time in an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Amaal revealed the emotional turmoil he went through during those years.
The relationship, which lasted from 2014 to 2019, ended painfully when his girlfriend’s parents objected to both his religion and his work in Bollywood. According to Amaal, her family did not want their daughter associated with anyone from the film industry, nor someone from a Muslim background.
Amaal Mallik recalled a heartbreaking moment when he was about to perform a concert and received a call from his then-girlfriend, telling him she was getting married to someone else. She even said she would elope if he came to her wedding. Despite the emotional pain, Amaal chose to walk away, saying, “If your parents can’t accept my religion and respect my career, then I wish you the best.”
This period was especially difficult for Amaal, coinciding with his work on the hit film Kabir Singh. He admitted that working on the film while going through the breakup was a tough emotional challenge.
Amaal Mallik also addressed misconceptions about his religious identity, stating, “There is not even an ‘I’ of Islam in me,” highlighting his more secular personal beliefs despite his background.
