Anurag Kashyap recalls quitting a film after dealing with seven managers of a big Bollywood star. Read how he gifted his script and shared insights on rising entourage costs in the film industry.
Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently opened up about a challenging experience with a big Bollywood star and their team of managers. Speaking on the YouTube channel Game Changers, Kashyap revealed how he had to quit a project despite writing the script due to the star’s overwhelming entourage.
According to Anurag Kashyap, when he directly contacted the actor to conduct a language workshop for a film, he received no response from the star. Instead, he was approached by seven managers, who reprimanded him for reaching out directly. “They told me, ‘How can you message the actor like this? You can’t do this,’” he recalled. “There were seven people sitting there to decide everything. I left the film. I had written the script, but I gifted it to them. I can’t take his name, but he is a big actor.”

Anurag Kashyap also discussed the growing costs and complexities of managing modern film productions. “Make-up is a department in a film, but now every individual actor has their own make-up artist,” he said. He contrasted his earlier films like Nishaanchi, where one make-up artist with two assistants handled the entire team, and Gangs of Wasseypur, where actors shared a single vanity van. “Nowadays, one actor has three vanity vans — one for meetings, one to rest in, and one for their assistants,” he explained.
This revelation sheds light on the increasing challenges filmmakers face while working with high-profile actors and their extensive teams. Despite these hurdles, Kashyap has continued to deliver critically acclaimed films. His latest release, the crime drama Nishaanchi, hit theatres on September 19, 2025, while his other project, Bandar, was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Kashyap’s candid discussion highlights the evolving dynamics of the Bollywood industry and the pressures filmmakers face in balancing creative control with the demands of superstar entourages.
