Filmmaker Kashyap Opens Up on T-Series’ Unequal Payments for Soundtracks
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap didn’t hold back in a recent interview, calling out India’s biggest music label, T-Series, for underpaying him on some of his most celebrated soundtracks while shelling out big bucks for others that didn’t even click.

Speaking candidly to The Juggernaut, Anurag Kashyap revealed that despite the cult popularity of films like DevD, Gulaal, and Gangs of Wasseypur, T-Series barely compensated him for their music rights. “If Bhushan Kumar [Managing Director of T-Series] is not buying it, then it is good music,” Kashyap joked. “They don’t pay for the quality of music, only for the star power attached to it.”
He highlighted how DevD’s soundtrack, which still enjoys a dedicated fan following, earned him “very little money,” even though the label profited handsomely from it. “They paid nothing for DevD’s track despite the film’s music being one of the cult soundtracks,” Kashyap said.
In a twist of irony, Anurag Kashyap said the highest payment he received from T-Series was for the Bombay Velvet soundtrack—a film whose music, according to him, “didn’t work” for the label. “They don’t understand good music and will push only for a certain kind of music,” he added.
This bold statement shines a spotlight on the ongoing tension between artistic value and commercial interests in Bollywood’s music industry, with Kashyap’s remarks resonating among many who believe that quality often takes a backseat to celebrity appeal.
