Apple’s design team faces a leadership vacuum as John Ternus promises to restore design focus and revive Apple’s creative direction.
The future of the Apple Apple design team is under fresh scrutiny following reports of a long-running leadership vacuum inside one of the company’s most influential divisions. According to a Bloomberg report, the Apple design team—once considered the creative heart of the company—has gradually lost its executive influence over the past decade.
As incoming CEO John Ternus prepares to take charge in September, he has publicly signalled a renewed focus on restoring the legacy and importance of the Apple design team, which shaped iconic products like the iPhone, iPod, and Apple Watch.
From Design Powerhouse to Support Function
The decline of the Apple design team reportedly began around 2015 when legendary designer Jony Ive stepped back from daily operations. Although he was later named chief design officer, the move marked the beginning of reduced direct influence over product strategy.
When Ive eventually left in 2019 to establish LoveFrom, the Apple design team lost its most influential figure. His successor, Evans Hankey, did not receive a seat on Apple’s executive leadership team, signaling a structural downgrade in design authority within the company.
Over time, this shift transformed the Apple design team from a central decision-making unit into a support function for engineering and operations-led product development.
Leadership Instability and Key Departures
The instability continued as former COO Jeff Williams assumed oversight of the Apple design team, despite lacking a formal design background. His leadership approach reportedly prioritized continuity over creative disruption, aiming to prevent further exits.
However, departures continued. Alan Dye, who led software design, left for Meta, further weakening the senior leadership pipeline of the Apple design team. Eventually, Williams appointed industrial designer Molly Anderson to lead the group, a move seen internally as pragmatic rather than visionary.
The result, according to the report, is a thinner, more junior Apple design team, with fewer long-tenured creative leaders shaping product direction.

John Ternus Signals a Design-First Reset
With John Ternus set to become CEO, expectations are rising that Apple may attempt to restore the prominence of its design culture. In an internal meeting, Ternus emphasized that design remains central to Apple’s identity.
He stated, “Going to keep focusing on design, because design is core to what we do at Apple,” reinforcing hopes that the Apple design team will regain its former influence.
Ternus also highlighted Apple’s global design legacy, noting that the company has brought “truly incredible design to more people than any company in history,” and stressed that this standard must continue.
His comments suggest that the Apple design team could see a strategic revival under his leadership.
The Road Ahead for Apple’s Design Identity
Despite optimism, rebuilding the Apple design team will not be simple. Years of structural changes, executive reshuffling, and talent departures have weakened its internal authority. Analysts suggest that restoring its influence will require not just leadership changes, but a cultural reset within Apple’s product development process.
Still, Apple’s design legacy remains one of its strongest competitive advantages. If Ternus succeeds in strengthening the Apple design team, it could mark a return to the design-led innovation era that defined the Jobs-Ive years.
For now, all eyes are on whether the incoming leadership can truly re-establish the Apple design team as the creative engine of the world’s most valuable technology company.
