Apple reveals its plans to transform India's renewable energy landscape by 2030, igniting a major debate about water.

Apple has promised to match every watt of electricity used for device charging with sustainable energy by 2030 in an effort to offset the emissions generated by consumers charging their gadgets.

Apple has said that new partnerships and projects include the deployment of renewable energy and the replenishment of water in India. The main thrust of this announcement is the rise in clean electricity to over 18 gigawatts, which triples the amount recorded in 2020 and drives the company’s global operations and supply chain. More than 300 suppliers, or 95% of Apple’s direct manufacturing expenditure, have shifted to using renewable energy sources in their operations. The company’s supply chain now has 16.5 gigawatts of renewable energy available as a result of this change.

To mitigate the emissions caused by consumers charging their smartphones, the manufacturer of iPhones has committed to replacing every watt of electricity used for charging with clean energy by 2030. Large-scale investments in new renewable capacity have increased significantly in a number of global markets.

What Is Apple Doing For This?

Apple and CleanMax, a leading provider of renewable energy in India, have joined forces to invest in a portfolio of six rooftop solar projects totaling 14.4 megawatts. The goal of this locally sourced renewable energy solution is to meet the electricity needs of Apple’s national operations, two retail locations, and corporate offices.

India is also a major target market for Apple’s water saving efforts. Through a creative program created in partnership with Uptime Catalyst Facility, the organization accomplished the noteworthy milestone of 100% water replenishment for its corporate activities in India in the previous year. More than 300 community water kiosks were able to provide 23 million gallons of inexpensive, clean drinking water thanks to this program.

It has announced new long-term agreements aimed toward restoring freshwater supplies in the high-stress Indian states of Telangana and Maharashtra, in an effort to further expand these initiatives. With the support of more than $8 million in additional project funding, these initiatives should produce 6.9 billion gallons of water benefit over a 20-year period. Restoring aquifers and rivers is one of the tactics used to effectively solve the problems associated with water scarcity.

With programs in place in other crucial areas like the Colorado River Basin in Arizona and Northern and Southern California in the United States, Apple is taking a comprehensive approach to addressing water stress globally. The corporation has successfully reclaimed over 12 billion gallons of freshwater inside its supply chain last year alone, according to its Supplier Clean Water Program.

In 2023, Apple’s renewable energy initiatives prevented nearly 18.5 million metric tons of carbon emissions by securing 25.5 million megawatt-hours of clean electricity globally. Notable capital expenditures such as the China Clean Energy Fund have enabled the creation of over 1 gigawatt of new solar and wind power facilities.

Apple, one of the biggest IT companies in the world, is making strong environmental measures a priority since they are essential to its long-term plan for the ensuing ten years.

Apple spent a good deal of last year’s iPhone launch event outlining its initiatives to lessen its carbon footprint. The occasion also saw the release of Apple’s first carbon-neutral products, including the carbon-neutral Sport Loop band paired with the aluminum Apple Watch Series 9 or SE.
