Arijit Singh announces a break from playback singing to focus on his debut film as a director. The break is temporary; he will continue making music.
Bollywood sensation Arijit Singh stunned fans worldwide by announcing that he will be stepping back from playback singing. The announcement, made via social media on Tuesday night, immediately went viral, leaving fans and the industry in shock.
In a post on Instagram and a series of tweets on X, Arijit wrote, “Hello, Happy New Year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey.”
While fans were left anxious and surprised, sources close to the singer have clarified that the break is temporary and career-driven, rather than a permanent exit from music.
A source revealed to HT City, “Arijit is dedicating time to his debut film as a director. He has been passionate about directing for a long time, and managing playback offers alongside it was not feasible. This is more like a break of a year or so while he focuses on his directorial debut.”
Reports suggest that the film will star Shora Siddiqui, daughter of acclaimed actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Arijit Singh also reassured fans that he will continue making music, though he will not take on new playback assignments. In a tweet, he mentioned, “Just to be clear that I won’t stop making music.” When challenged by a fan to justify his decision, Arijit responded with a touch of humor: “Justify my inappropriate decision!!?”
He further added, “I still have to finish some pending commitments, will finish them, so you might get some releases this year.”
Fans have expressed mixed reactions, with one describing it as a “Virat Kohli test-retirement level of shock,” while another supported his choice, saying, “He will be making music, but as a vocalist, he won’t be available. Should’ve selected only a few songs to sing, but it’s his call. I wish him the best.”
Industry insiders believe that this move highlights Arijit Singh’s versatility and creative ambition, as he explores filmmaking while maintaining his identity as a musician.
The announcement has sparked widespread discussions across social media, with fans eagerly awaiting his upcoming projects both as a director and a musician.
