Following a fight with her neighbor over using a shared tap in the Farsh Bazar neighborhood of northeast Delhi, a woman was killed. Minister Atishi of Delhi has written to Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena requesting that he suspend the CEO of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) within 24 hours.

In the memo, Saxena was encouraged to “institute an independent enquiry into the acts of omission and commission of Chief Secretary, as well as officers of Finance Department, Urban Development Department, and DJB” by Atishi, who is also in charge of the water portfolio.

According to her, as a result of their activities, DJB was “starved of funds” for the 2023–24 fiscal year, making it “unable to execute essential works like installation of borewells.”

“The chief minister has provided clear instructions and a roadmap for enhancing Delhi’s water supply for more than a year.

“Over the past six months, the Chief Secretary and the CEO of Delhi Jal Board have received repeated directives (attached) from the undersigned to guarantee that the water supply is increased so that there is never a shortage come summertime.

But Atishi said, “No action has been taken to prevent this water crisis in Delhi, despite repeated directions.”

After a fight over filling the communal tap with water, Delhi Police on Sunday arrested a 15-year-old girl for reportedly fatally stabbing her 34-year-old neighbor, according to officials.

“The Hon’ble LG is requested to immediately suspend the CEO of Delhi Jal Board within 24 hours of this shocking incident involving the death of a woman in Farsh Bazar as a result of violence caused by a water shortage, as this criminal negligence occurred under his watch.”

“Implement a disciplinary action against all officers in the GNCTD departments and DJB that are accountable for not augmenting the water supply for the summers of 2024,” stated Atishi.

She claimed that deaths in Delhi are the result of the acts and inactions of Delhi government officials.

“The Hon’ble LG, in charge of Services and Vigilance, needs to act quickly and decisively to let all officers know that this kind of carelessness won’t be accepted. The Hon’ble LG will be looked to by the people of Delhi for prompt action, she remarked.

She said that over the past three weeks, the chief secretary and CEO of DJB have received numerous warnings to make sure that tube wells and water tankers are used to supplement the water supply.
