Bangladesh assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin slams Asif Nazrul as ‘liar’ over T20 World Cup 2026 boycott U-turn, players devastated by decision.
The controversy surrounding Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2026 boycott continues as senior assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin has openly criticized former sports advisor Asif Nazrul, calling him a liar for reversing his stance on the team’s participation. Asif Nazrul had previously stated that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the players were responsible for the decision not to travel to India for the mega event.
Salahuddin Denounces Asif Nazrul’s U-turn
Speaking to the media, Salahuddin said, “He told such blatant lies. I am a teacher myself, and teachers generally lie less. That he would say such lies so openly—I honestly can’t imagine it. How will I even show my face in front of the boys? He took such a U-turn. He is a teacher at Dhaka University. A person from the highest educational institution in my country spreading such lies is unacceptable.”
The assistant coach clarified that the government had imposed the decision to boycott the World Cup, and neither the players nor the cricket board had any role in it.

Players Left Heartbroken
Salahuddin revealed that the team’s players were devastated after being informed about the boycott. “When a boy goes to play a World Cup, he carries his dream—his 27-year-old dream—with him. You destroy that dream in one second. If it’s a national decision, players will sacrifice for the country. But personally, the decision completely ended a boy’s dream. Two of my players went numb for days,” he explained.
He further added that the communication regarding the boycott should have been better. Many players were reportedly not asked for their opinions before the decision was imposed, causing emotional distress.
Salahuddin Hails Players’ Comeback
Despite the setback, Salahuddin praised the resilience of his players. “The fact that we were able to bring them back onto the field in this tournament is itself a big achievement. This is the biggest success of my coaching career—that they returned to play and performed well. Money is secondary; the World Cup is the dream every cricketer cherishes,” he said.
Salahuddin also emphasized that while players and coaches were willing to make sacrifices for the nation, they should not have been made to bear the personal loss caused by poor communication. “If things had been explained properly, many issues could have been accepted calmly,” he concluded.
