India’s wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant suffered a new injury setback during Day 1 of the fourth Test against England in Manchester on July 23. The 27-year-old, who was already dealing with a finger injury from the previous Test, took a painful hit on his right foot and was forced to retire hurt. Teammate Shubman Gill later provided an update on his condition.
Details of the Incident
The injury occurred on the fourth delivery of the 68th over during India’s first innings. While attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes, Pant misjudged the ball’s line, and it struck his right foot hard.
Pant collapsed in pain and was immediately attended to by the physios. Though England appealed for an LBW, replays showed an inside edge, ruling out the dismissal. Still, the blow forced Pant to leave the field.
Upon removing his gear, a visible swelling and bleeding spot were observed on the outer side of his right foot. Unable to walk, he was taken off the field on a golf cart.
BCCI Issues Official Statement
In an official release, the BCCI stated, “Rishabh Pant was hit on his right foot while batting on Day 1 of the Manchester Test. He was taken for scans from the stadium. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress.”
Sudharsan and Gill Share Updates
During the post-day press briefing, Sai Sudharsan shared, “He was in a lot of pain and has gone to the hospital for scans. We’re awaiting an update. If he doesn’t return, it will be a setback, but the rest of the batting group is ready to step up.”
Pant’s Innings Before Injury
Before retiring hurt, Pant made a vital contribution of 37 runs off 48 balls, which included four boundaries and a six—proving crucial for an already injury-hit Indian side.
Mounting Injury Woes for India
Pant’s foot injury adds to India’s growing list of casualties on this England tour. He had already missed wicketkeeping duties in the previous Test due to a finger injury, with Dhruv Jurel filling in. If Pant remains unavailable, Jurel is likely to take the gloves again.
India’s bowling attack has also been weakened, with Akash Deep (groin injury) and Arshdeep Singh (finger injury) ruled out of the Manchester Test, further complicating team selection and strategy.
