FIR Fallout: Bengaluru Police Question Sonu Nigam at His Mumbai Home
Iconic singer Sonu Nigam has found himself at the center of a growing controversy following his refusal to sing a Kannada song — a decision that has sparked legal action and backlash from pro-Kannada groups. Now, the situation has taken a more serious turn, as a team of Bengaluru Police officials arrived at Nigam’s Mumbai residence to record his statement in connection with the case.
According to reports from IANS, the police team consisted of an inspector from Avalahalli Police Station along with two other officers. Their visit is linked to an FIR registered on May 3, alleging that Sonu Nigam made statements which “emotionally provoked” and “hurt the sentiments” of the Kannadiga community. The complaint was lodged by Dharmaraj A., President of the Bengaluru Urban District Unit of the pro-Kannada organization Karnataka Rakshana Vedike.

The controversy began when Sonu Nigam declined to perform a Kannada-language song at an event, a move that was perceived by some as disrespectful to the regional culture. The singer’s comments allegedly sparked tensions between linguistic communities and led to widespread criticism across social media.
In response, Sonu Nigam issued a public apology on May 5, sharing a heartfelt message on social media:
“Sorry Karnataka. My love for you is bigger than my ego. Love you always.”
Despite the apology, legal proceedings are now underway, and police have begun formally gathering evidence. It remains to be seen whether Sonu Nigam will face further action or if his statement will help de-escalate the situation.
