Tata Digital CEO Abruptly Quits — Is the Superapp Strategy Falling Apart?
Tata Digital, the digital commerce arm of the Tata Group, is going through some major changes. Just a year after being appointed, CEO Naveen Tahilyani has stepped down unexpectedly. His exit comes at a time when the company is rethinking its approach and focusing more on its core consumer brands like Croma and Tata Cliq.

Tahilyani was brought in by Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran to drive discipline and strategic focus across Tata Digital’s portfolio, which includes BigBasket, 1mg, Tata Cliq, and the Neu app. Now, he’s moving on to take up a new role as regional CEO for Prudential PLC, covering India and several other countries, where he will also head their health division.
Back at Tata Digital, finance chief Hardeep Singh Guru is expected to step up as the new CEO. He’s well-connected within the Tata Group and is seen as someone who can keep things steady during this transition.
During Tahilyani’s time, Tata Digital tried to unify its businesses and prepare BigBasket and 1mg for fundraising and IPOs. But those plans changed, and now these companies seem to be moving forward independently. Tata Digital also hit pause on integrating the backend systems of these brands to focus on improving user experience, especially on the Neu superapp. Meanwhile, 1mg is expanding its offline presence.
The leadership shuffle isn’t new for Tata Digital. Since 2022, several senior executives have left, including Myntra founder Mukesh Bansal, showing that the company is still trying to find its footing in a competitive market.
