This fungus can thrive in damp and warm environments, especially when onions are stored improperly or have damaged skins.
The infection usually begins at the onion’s neck, roots, or between layers, showing up as black, powdery spots. While they may appear superficial, the fungal spores can spread internally, making the onion unsafe to consume.

Many people believe scraping off the dark spots makes the onion safe to eat, but Narang cautions that this is only partially effective.
