Bollywood star Vidya Balan
Lover of Malayalam cinema Vidya Balan feels Bollywood actors will never take on a character like that of Malayalam icon Mammootty, who plays a gay guy in “Kaathal.”
Vidya Balan praises Mammootty’s performance in Kaathal
In an interview with “Unfiltered By Samdish,” Vidya talked about how much she loved Mammootty’s portrayal in “Kaathal” and praised him for both producing the movie and taking on such a role.
“I saw Kaathal lately, and he looks amazing. After that, I sent Dulquer a message asking her to please tell your father what I had said. He produced the movie in addition to acting in it. To have portrayed a homosexual man for the biggest Malayalam film star… There’s none, in my opinion, a stronger demonstration of inclusion and community support. Vidya remarked, “I thought it was brilliant.”

Vidya on Bollywood superstars not playing a gay character
She added that male Bollywood performers of the caliber of Mohanlal and Mammootty would probably avoid taking on parts like this. Sadly, I don’t believe any of the stars in current Hindi movies could pull off a movie like Kaathal. I’m talking exclusively about male actors. They are stuck because they already have a prototype for a male hero. Though it appears impossible to me, I believe that it is tough to happen here. Bohat hi muskhil, namumkin lagta hai mujhe agar ho jaaye yo bohat acchi baat hai. If it occurs, it will be very beneficial.)
Vidya said, “We have to accept that it is a more literate audience in Kerala that makes a big difference,” in response to the question of whether she believes the Hindi public is less accepting of their stars playing LGBT characters. Speaking of the lowest common denominator, Keralans too have extremely distinct needs than other people. I mean, it’s still fantastic that he accomplished that, so no offense intended, but perhaps it’s a little bit simpler there.
“They revere their actors like no one else in South, they worship their actors, especially their male superstars, so I think it’s that much more creditable that he went ahead and did it,” Vidya continued her appreciation for Mammootty. He had no feelings or thoughts that it would somehow diminish my machismo. He is a really assured performer.
