Delhi CM Rekha Gupta’s praise of the Brahmin community as the “flame of knowledge” sparks political backlash. AAP calls her remarks insensitive amid ongoing caste and governance debates.
Delhi CM Rekha has found herself at the center of a political storm after her remarks praising the Brahmin community for “igniting the flame of knowledge in society” drew sharp criticism from the opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Speaking at the All India Brahmin Conference hosted by Shri Brahmin Sabha in Pitampura, North West Delhi, on Sunday, Gupta lauded the community for its role in preserving knowledge and contributing to societal growth. However, her comments — especially her assertion that “every government should work for the welfare of the Brahmin community” — were quickly labelled as “insensitive” and “divisive” by AAP leaders.
Delhi CM Rekha Gupta’s Full Remarks Spark Outrage
In her address, CM Rekha Gupta stated: “If anyone is igniting the flame of knowledge in society, it is our Brahmin community. They worship not only scriptures but also weapons. Only through weapons and scriptures can we protect society and the country today. By igniting the flame of knowledge, propagating religion, and fostering goodwill, the Brahmin community has always worked for the benefit of society.”
She further emphasized that all governments, regardless of party lines, must work for the upliftment and progress of Brahmins.
Gupta also discussed Delhi’s developmental backlog and invited the Brahmin community to offer suggestions:
“Delhi has been stuck for 27 years. It’s time to shift gears and accelerate progress. If we all work together, Delhi can be transformed into a **‘Viksit Delhi’ (Developed Delhi).”

AAP’s Response: “Insult to Public Sentiment”
The Aam Aadmi Party, which lost power in the February 2025 Assembly elections after a 10-year rule, swiftly responded. Senior AAP leader Sanjeev Jha called Gupta’s comments “astonishing” and said such remarks disrespect the sentiments of Delhi’s diverse population.
“Speaking in such a manner about any particular community is not only insensitive but also an insult to the collective sentiment of the people,” Jha posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Gupta’s Vision of a ‘Sanatani’ Government in Delhi
The remarks come on the heels of a major political shift in the capital, with BJP returning to power in Delhi after 27 years, ending the AAP era.
Recently, Delhi CM Rekha had also declared that a “Sanatani government” was now in place in Delhi. Speaking about the upcoming Chhath Puja celebrations along the Yamuna riverbank, she claimed that past governments had ignored the cultural significance of the Purvanchali community and failed to provide proper infrastructure for the festival.
“For years, Chhath was not celebrated on the Yamuna banks due to the previous government’s negligence. Now that a Sanatani government is in power, we are making arrangements for a grand celebration this year,” Gupta said during an inspection of Chhath Puja preparations.
Political and Public Reactions Mixed
While BJP supporters hailed Gupta’s remarks as a recognition of India’s cultural heritage, critics said her focus on a single community could alienate other social groups and disturb Delhi’s secular fabric.
Social media also saw a flurry of mixed reactions. While some users applauded the emphasis on traditional values, others questioned whether governance should prioritize specific caste groups.
