CARING-2024: Two day workshop, hosted by the Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CSIR-CIMFR), is underway and will center on the prospects and problems associated with coal gasification. The CSIR-CIMFR Digwadih Campus will host this event on June 26–27, 2024, bringing together stakeholders, researchers, policymakers, and leaders in the industry to discuss the promise and complexities of gasification technology.

The workshop is expected to be a major event in the field of gasification with over 75 participants from various organizations including Coal India Limited (CIL), Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) Angul, Hindalco Industries, Thermax, and others from across India.

Dr. Arvind Kumar Mishra, Director of CSIR-CIMFR, gave a welcome speech during the workshop’s official opening ceremony. During his address, Dr. Mishra underlined the value of coal in the world’s energy mix and the potential of gasification to produce a range of high-value products, including chemicals, liquid fuels, fertilizers (particularly ammonium nitrate), and methanol.

The workshop’s goals and their applicability to the industry were outlined by Dr. Prakash D. Chavan, Head of Gasification at CSIR-CIMFR. He emphasized how important gasification is to developing environmentally friendly energy sources and promoting industrial expansion.

An enlightening introductory talk was given by the chief guest, Shri Anandji Prasad, a project advisor from the Ministry of Coal. He talked about how gasification has a lot of promise for India’s energy sector and mentioned that the government has set aside ₹8500 crore to support the development of gasification plants. Shri Prasad emphasized the role that gasification technology will play in helping India meet its energy targets and improve energy security. He went on to highlight the Ministry of Coal’s emphasis on gasification and building the ecosystem necessary to meet the goal of gasifying 100 MT of coal by 2030.

The goal of this workshop, which is part of the CSIR One Week One Theme: Energy and Energy Devices Program, is to encourage participant collaboration, creativity, and information sharing. It gives interested parties a forum to talk about developments, resolve issues, and investigate prospects in gasification technology, ultimately enhancing India’s energy security and sustainability.
