Cheti Chand 2024: India is a wonderful place in the world with various religious and cultural structures that enthusiastically celebrate innumerable festivals. Cheti Chand is another famous Sindhi festival. Varun Dev (Water God) Sai Uderolal popularly known as Jhulelal birthday celebration. It is considered a very lucky day and is celebrated with great pomp. For Sindhis, Cheti Chand marks the beginning of a new year. Marathi New Year falls on the same day as Cheti Chand, as does Gudi Padwa.

On this day they worship the life-giving water. On the day of the full moon, many people go to the banks of a lake or river “Akho” with rice mixed with milk and flour. If there is no river or such waterbody is not nearby, you can perform this ritual in a well.

Sindhi New Year – Cheti Chand 2024 Dates and Auspicious Muhurat

Cheti Chand 2024 usually falls on the first day of Chaitra Shukla Paksha i.e. the start of the month Chet (Sindhi month) according to the Hindu calendar. Sometimes this can happen on the second day. According to the Gregorian calendar, it means the period from March to April. This year Sindhi New Year is celebrated on the following day and muhurat:

Cheti Chand: Tuesday, April 9, 2024
Cheti Chand Muhurat: 7:30 PM to 8:54 PM.
Pratipada Tithi Starts: April 8, 2024, 2:20 PM
Pratipada Tithi End: 9th April 2024 11:00 AM.

What is the significance of Cheti Chand?

Sindhis celebrate this festival to celebrate the birthday of Jhulelal, also known as Uderolal. He is known to be their patron saint. For Cheti Chand 2024 Sindhi, the belief that Varun Dev resurrected on this day as Jhulelal is very important. He did this to save the Sindhi community from the tyranny of a leader who wanted to destroy Sindhi culture and Hinduism. This day is considered auspicious for worshipping and thanking the water god.

Chaitra is considered an important month and is called “Chet” by the Sindhi community. Moreover, each new month as per their Panchang begins with the New Moon i.e. ‘Chand’. Hence, the festival is celebrated with full enthusiasm and the day is called Cheti Chand.
Cheti Chand is very helpful and promises to start new ventures.

Cheti Chand 2024 celebration

Sindhis perform various ceremonies and pray for 40 days. This offering is known as Chaliho. Afterwards they celebrate the grand festival of Cheti Chand. Many of them fast on this day and break their fast after offering fruits. This ceremony can be performed as below:

Behrana Sahib, bring an offering consisting of diya oil, cardamom, sugar, fruits and deer to the lake or river. A statue of Lord Jhulelal is also carried along.
Jyot Jagan Light, a five-wick Diyah made from wheat flour.
Immerse Behrana Sahib in water and sing Pallav to please God and get blessings. Distribute the prasadam.
You can do charity work by giving food and clothing to the poor.

Paying homage to Jhulelal, members of the Sindhi group showcased their rich culture. This is achieved through a range of activities such as theatre, dance, music and folk talent. People also prepare delicious food to enjoy with their family and friends. They meet and greet each other with the slogan “Cheti Chand Jyon Lakh Lakh Vadhaiyan Athav”. Jhulelal Jayanti or Sindhi New Year is a great event full of excitement, joy and elegance.
