In a video conference with all of the state’s deputy commissioners, Sh. Anurag Verma, chief secretary, followed orders from Punjab’s chief minister, Sh. Bhagwant Singh Mann, to ensure that the public is not inconvenienced during the rainy season. The Bhakra Dam’s current level, as reported by the Principal Secretary of Water Resources, is 1590 feet, which is 8 feet lower than it was a year ago. Comparably, Pong Dam has dropped 30 feet, and Ranjit Sagar Dam has dropped 34 feet from the previous year.
According to Mr. Verma, flood protection work totaling Rs. 252 crores was completed this year—nearly 1.5 times the amount of work completed on average over the previous two years. Mr. Verma gave the Deputy Commissioners instructions to revisit the areas in their districts that are susceptible to flooding and make sure that the necessary work has been done to prevent it. He gave the Deputy Commissioners instructions to stay in contact with the locals in the villages close to the weak spots for the duration of the monsoon season.
The Deputy Commissioners were instructed by Mr. Verma to confirm that the cities’ sewage systems had been cleaned. They were told to make sure the de-watering pumps and the generator were working. Additionally, Deputy Commissioners were instructed to set up generators at water pumping stations. They were also instructed to review the electricity agreements with PSPCL authorities in order to minimize power outages during inclement weather.
About 8.5 lakh EC bags have been purchased and placed available close to the vulnerable points in the several Districts, according to Principal Secretary of Water Resources Krishan Kumar. Deputy Commissioners stated that they had prepared evacuation plans that can be carried out in an emergency. In every district, a flood control room has been constructed. In case of an emergency, human and animal shelters have been designated.
According to Mr. Verma, every piece of state equipment will be operational around-the-clock to guarantee that the public is not inconvenienced by flooding.
